Twelfth Night Character Analysis - 1739 Words

Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy that questions the nature of love, gender, and class. Viola disguises herself as Cesario, and this transformation into Cesario by Viola draws the admiration of Olivia. While Olivia is trying to attract Cesarios attention, Orsino is trying to catch Olivias eye which only creates a comedic love triangle. This love triangle creates the comedy in the book, while also questioning what love is, and the roles that gender, and class creates in Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is filled with characters whose emotions for someone seen to be superficial. In Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, the characters use the term in love very loosely. Throughout the play, there are several characters who truly believe†¦show more content†¦As he imagines his future with her he reveals that he only loves her for the power that he would receive by marrying her. All of these male characters only love Olivia for her wealth, power, and beauty, they dont genuinely love her for who she is. To these men marrying Oliva would make their life easier for all the wrong reasons rather than just overlooking the superficial reasons to love her. I believe that if Olivia wasnt a royal or had money then they wouldnt love her. But not only do these male characters in twelfth night experience love; even though they dont understand what love is, but also Olivia has a problem recognizing the differences between real love and fake love. Olivia and Orsino share similar characteristics, such as love, passion, and obsession. Olivia and Orsino are similar in the sense that they both are chasing someone that cant necessarily have or want them. They are both passionate individuals and when they love someone they tend to try everything in power; no matter how weak they may seem, to get the one they love. Olivia and Orsino both seemed to be obsessed with their loved one, Olivia states thy tongue, thy face, thy limbs, actions and spirit, Do give thee five-fold blazon... (1.5. 280-287). Olivia is simply obsessed with everything about Cesario. Typically, when someone expresses their love for someone they dont really refer to some of the things that Olivia referred to when talking about Orsino.
